What you need to know about

Insurance for contractors

Insurance for contractors is particularly crucial since it’s typically not provided by their employers. Given their unique position within the industry, contractors are vulnerable to potential risks, and having the right insurance coverage is essential for your protection. At our brokerage, we have extensive experience working with numerous contractors, so we understand the specific policies you need to ensure comprehensive coverage.

Contractors insurance that we specialise in:

It is important to consider the industry in which you work as a contractor. Certain trades require mandatory policies like contractor public liability insurance before you can even begin working. If you find yourself unsure about the specific insurance policies you require, our experienced brokers are here to guide you through the process and help you understand your options.

What policies do I need to consider with my contractor's insurance?

While you are looking at insurance for contractors, there are a number of policies that you may need. We can assist with all insurances, however, these are some of the most common contractors’ insurances you may require:
  • Contractor public liability insurance – Financially protects you against claims made against you that you have caused either personal injury or property damage to a third party while carrying out your business activities due to a form of negligence
  • Personal accident and injury – Covers you for loss of income if you were unable to work as a result of an injury or illness.
  • Portable tools insurance – Tailored to protect your valuable tools from theft or damage, no matter where they are stored in your vehicle, workshop, or on-site.
As Insurance Brokers, we specialise in packaging up multiple policies which present the best-priced options but have them managed together in easy-to-maintain policies. Want to know more about the insurance you need? Read our blog article dedicated to demolition contractors.

Why should you have tailored insurance for contractors?

As a contractor, it is your responsibility to source your own insurance policy. That also means it is up to you to ensure you are fully covered in the event of an accident. Are you confident that you know everything that you’re covered for?

As brokers that specialise in sourcing contractors’ insurance, we can provide you with tailored advice across all insurance products. Since we’ve been working with a large number of contractors within the industry, we know which companies offer good cover and which offer cheaper alternatives for a scaled-back level of cover. Both options are fine, depending on how they impact you and your work.

This is where we can provide you with the most value by working out what exclusions or conditions have bigger impacts on your business and what conditions you can take advantage of to reduce your premium.

Your Contractor Insurance Questions Answered

A public liability policy will usually cover all projects up to your limit of liability.

Yes, this is quite normal and is usually required when multiple parties share an interest in a project.

A public liability policy requires property damage or personal injury to occur for the policy to respond in the event of a claim. If personal injury and property damage doesn’t occur than a professional indemnity can in some instances provide cover for “any financial loss”. A Professional Indemnity isn’t available to all occupations so it would need to be considered on a case by case basis.

In Australia, contractors insurance and public liability are treated as the same. Other countries refer to policies differently however, most contractors require public liability insurance in the first instance which is why it is usually referred to as contractors insurance. Or, it is used as a broad terminology of the “contractors insurance” that is specific to your role. For example, public liability, portable tools cover and professional indemnity.

If the use of subcontractors are declared on your policy than your policy will usually cover you for the negligence of the contractor however, it is likely, depending on your contractor agreement your insurer may seek recovery from the subcontractors insurance.

All policies are written on an annual basis – they can be cancelled at anytime however, some insurers and policies incur a minimum and deposit premium meaning that if cancelled mid-term there may or may not be a refund applicable. It is not the intention of a policy to be taken out and then cancelled when the project finishes and then taken out again at the commencement of your next project. Most insurers and Brokers will refuse to offer cover if this is the case.

Most policies are written on an occurrence basis which means that as long as there was a valid policy in place when the incident “occurred” then cover will be provided for previous work.
