What is Boilermaker Insurance?

Boilermakers and welding contractors are often required on high-risk sites, including mine shutdowns, heavy industrial fabrication zones, and power station projects. Most standard business insurance policies won’t extend to jobs like these—and they almost always exclude underground or mining-related work unless declared upfront.

Boilermaker Insurance is tailored to meet these challenges. Whether you’re a sole operator or manage a larger crew, this type of policy gives you the liability cover and protection needed to keep your operation running even when the work is risky. Most boilermakers will need two key policies: Public Liability Insurance and, depending on the work, Professional Indemnity Insurance.

Public Liability Insurance

This policy protects you if your work causes injury or property damage. A common example might be damage to mine infrastructure during a welding job, or a third-party contractor being injured by your tools or materials during shutdown work. Public Liability Insurance covers legal defence costs, compensation, and damages.

Many generic policies won’t cover fabrication work performed in confined spaces, or onsite at mine and plant facilities. We partner with insurers who can provide cover specifically for these environments.

Professional Indemnity Insurance

If you’re signing off on welding compliance, structural integrity reports, or any professional advisory work related to metalwork, you could be liable if something goes wrong. Professional Indemnity Insurance is designed to protect you against claims of negligence, errors, or omissions that lead to financial loss.

It’s particularly relevant if your work involves documentation, certifications, or project oversight on behalf of site management or engineers.

How to Get the Right Boilermaker Insurance Policy

Know what’s excluded
Hot works, shutdown sites, or working at heights are often not covered by default. We ensure any exclusions are identified and addressed before you bind the policy.

Check your listed occupation
Insurers base your cover on the job title and description you list. Make sure your policy accurately reflects what you do.

Cover for subcontractors
If you use subbies, make sure your policy extends cover to them—or know what their own policy must include.

Underground work
Standard policies rarely include underground or mine-site work. Our policies are built for both above and below-ground activity.

Welding and Boilermaker Insurance Questions Answered

It often is. Most commercial and mine sites require you to hold valid Public Liability Insurance before granting site access or awarding contracts.

Yes—we can package your liability insurance with cover for tools, equipment, and trailers, including during transport or while left onsite.

Even occasional mining or shutdown work must be disclosed. We can arrange cover that accommodates seasonal or intermittent high-risk jobs.

Pricing depends on factors like your work type, locations, subcontractor use, and whether you work above or below ground. We’ll provide a quote tailored to your situation.

You do if your work includes inspections, compliance sign-offs, or advisory services. If you issue reports or documentation, PI cover is worth considering.
