What Is Scaffolders Insurance?

Scaffolders face daily exposure to some of the construction industry’s highest risk factors—height, equipment handling, falling objects, and tight project deadlines. Most off-the-shelf business insurance policies either exclude scaffolding altogether or fail to provide enough cover for the real risks you face.

Scaffolders Insurance is designed to close that gap. Whether you’re a sole trader or running a crew across multiple sites, the right policy ensures you’re covered for third-party injury, property damage, equipment loss, and more.

Public Liability Insurance For Scaffolding
Essential for site access, this policy protects you from claims where your work causes injury or property damage. Most sites require at least $10–20 million in cover. This includes incidents such as equipment falling and damaging vehicles or passers-by injured near the worksite.

Professional Indemnity Insurance for Scaffolding
Relevant for scaffolders involved in site planning, sign-offs, or compliance documentation. If your advice, report, or design results in a safety failure or financial loss, PI insurance can cover legal defence and compensation costs.

We work with insurers who understand scaffolding and provide clear, tailored cover—even for high-risk or elevated work.

Scaffolder Insurance Claim Examples

Public liability insurance for scaffolding companies is one of the most vital policies that a scaff company should have. Unfortunately, this also means that it is usually the most frequently claimed on. Some of the public liability claims made against scaffolding companies on their liability insurance usually consists of:

  • Collapse of the scaffolding due to poor construction or poor installation
  • Dropping equipment whilst installing the scaffolding
  • Damage to the property that you are erecting the scaffolding against

There are many other claims that could be made however, these are the main claims that occur on scaffolder liability policies.

Although the scaffolding is made of hard steel, it can still be damaged. Some of the frequent portable equipment claims that we manage for scaffolding companies will typically see the following:

  • Damage to the scaffolding deeming it unusable
  • Theft of scaffolding elements, tools and materials

So when you are getting a scaffolders insurance quote make sure to consider your tools and equipment.

What Information Do Insurers Need from Scaffolders?

When applying for scaffolding liability insurance, most insurers will need to understand the nature of your work. This includes:

    • Whether you service residential homes, commercial developments, or industrial shutdowns

    • The maximum height your scaffolding reaches

    • Whether you provide mobile or fixed scaffold systems

    • Any mining or energy site involvement

Your Scaffolding Insurance Questions Answered

Scaffolders are considered a high risk due to the nature of work that they do.  Although your company has a number of legislation requirements and safety protocols in place the insurers base their premium and insurance decisions on risk.  Firstly, a number of insurers won’t insure scaffolding public liability insurance policies so it is a reduced market.  As for the insurers that will offer public liability insurance for scaffolding companies they asses their premium based off the works that you are engaged in. The higher risk they deem the work, the higher premium they will charge.

Scaffolding  liability insurance claims are quite common and as with most construction-related claims they are usually the following:

  • Collapsing of scaffolding due to poor construction or weather-related events
  • Dropping of equipment from heights
  • Damage to the structure that they are putting the scaffolding on
  • Worker to worker claims for injuries other contractors that may be on site

There are multiple policies that can provide cover for scaffolding equipment going from site to site. A general property cover will cover the actual scaffolding for damage for example, in the event of a truck collision occurring whilst carrying scaffolding the damage to the scaffolding equipment would be covered. This also extends to cover scaffolding while erected on a job site.

Yes, as above a general property cover will provide Australia wide coverage for the scaffolding equipment for theft and damage.

Most public liability policies will cover worldwide territories excluding USA and Canada therefor incidental work that is done internationally can be considered. This would be subject to insurer acceptance.

Yes, some of the scaffolding companies that we look after are involved in installing stadium seating, scaffolding for multi-storey construction sites and many more. We have a strong relationship with our insurers and can usually put suitable cover in place for your scaffolding business.

Some of the scaffolding liability insurance that is harder to place is for the mining sector, grandstands and stadium seating. We do however, have tailored mining insurance policies and offshore policy placement for higher risk activities.
