Construction Equipment Insurance for business owners and operators

Insurance for construction equipment can generally be quite straightforward however, your machinery works in harsh conditions and its value means a single incident can cost tens or hundreds of thousands of dollars to put right.

After dealing with equipment owners and operators across Australia, we know what policies to put in place to ensure you have the cover you need and can rely on.

The main distinction to understand is between damage caused by external events, which sits under Plant and Machinery cover, and internal mechanical failure, which needs Machinery Breakdown cover.

Depending on what you run, whether you own it outright, finance it or hire it in, and how it moves between sites will depend on what insurance policies you need to have in place.

If earthmoving is your core business, see our dedicated Earthmoving Insurance page, and if your model is hiring equipment out without an operator, see our Dry Hire Insurance page.

The most common insurance for equipment owners and operators are:

Our focus is on delivering you quality advice, removing the overload of phone calls and paperwork to make sure that you have a dedicated insurance advisor that you can count on.

All of our Brokers are here to work with you to make the process simple and easier to manage, with your machines accurately valued so you are not caught underinsured at claim time.

What to look out for when buying construction equipment insurance

Breakdown vs Damage

You will typically only be able to build double-storey dwellings due to height restrictions of 10 meters.

Be sure that your insurance policy does not exclude you from working at heights if thats the type of work you generally do.

Hired-In Plant

Your insurance company still needs to know if you use a small number of subbies.

We ask these questions so that we can ensure that your policies are suitable for the work you’re doing.

Values & Attachments

When policies are laid out side by side and you can only see the price then you may not even be aware of the exclusions that apply on the policy.

Using an insurance broker doesn’t generally cost you anything more.

Our job is to review the quotes, make sure they are appropriate for you and don’t reduce your cover to an expensive piece of paper.

We have seen countless times where tradies have purchased their insurance online and then when it came time to claim the policy didn’t provide the cover they expected.

How Construction Equipment
Insurance Can Respond

Understanding how construction equipment insurance works in practice can help show why the right cover matters.

The scenarios below are illustrative examples only. Whether and how a policy responds always depends on the specific policy terms, conditions and circumstances of the claim.

Excavator Theft from a Worksite

A 14-tonne excavator is stolen from an unsecured construction site in outer Melbourne over a long weekend and is never recovered.

With the machine insured on an agreed value basis, Plant and Machinery Insurance is designed to respond at that agreed value, allowing the operator to fund a replacement rather than absorbing a six-figure loss.

This scenario is also why insurers ask detailed questions about site security and tracking.

Hydraulic Failure on a Loader

A wheel loader on a Hunter Valley housing development suffers a catastrophic hydraulic pump failure, with the repair bill for the pump, hoses and labour running well into five figures.

Because the failure is internal rather than caused by an external event, a standard Plant and Machinery policy would generally not respond.

This is precisely the gap Machinery Breakdown Insurance is designed to fill, covering the repair and getting the machine back on the job.

Hired Skid Steer Destroyed by Fire

A Perth construction company hires a skid steer for a demolition project. An electrical fault causes a fire that destroys the unit on site.

The hire company holds the contractor liable for the full replacement value under the hire agreement.

Hired-In Plant Insurance is designed for exactly this exposure, responding to the liability so the contractor is not paying out for a machine they never owned.

Generator Damaged During Transport

A large diesel generator being floated between sites in regional Queensland shifts after the float hits a pothole, falls from the trailer and sustains major structural and mechanical damage.

Transit Insurance is designed to respond to damage occurring during transport, including loading and unloading, and depending on the policy may extend to the cost of hiring a temporary replacement while the unit is repaired.

Your Construction Equipment Insurance Questions Answered

There is no single national law mandating it, but most principal contractors require operators to hold adequate insurance before equipment comes onto site.

If your equipment is financed, your lender will almost always require cover as a condition of the loan.

Beyond those requirements, your equipment is likely among your most valuable business assets, and the cost of replacing it uninsured falls entirely on you.

A comprehensive program typically combines Plant and Machinery, Hired-In Plant, Machinery Breakdown, Transit, Public Liability and Tools of Trade cover.

The right combination depends on what you run, whether you hire equipment in or out, and how your machines move between sites.

The cost depends on the type, age and value of your equipment, how it is stored and secured, where it operates, the number of operators and your claims history.

We compare products from multiple insurers to find suitable cover at competitive terms for your fleet.

Plant and Machinery Insurance typically includes theft cover, provided your equipment is reasonably secured.

Insurers may require or reward specific measures such as immobilisers, GPS tracking or locked compounds, particularly for high-value or high-theft items like excavators and attachments.

We can advise which measures may be required or could reduce your premium.

Not usually. Your Plant and Machinery policy covers equipment you own.

Equipment hired from a third party generally needs Hired-In Plant cover to address your liability for it while it is in your care.

Check your hire agreements, because they typically make you responsible for the machine from pickup to return.

Generally not under a standard Plant and Machinery policy, which is written around external events.

Internal mechanical and electrical failures need Machinery Breakdown Insurance.

This distinction catches out more equipment owners than any other, so it is worth confirming exactly what your current policy excludes.

What insurance policies do equipment owners and operators need?

Plant and Machinery Insurance is the foundation of any construction equipment program.

It covers your owned equipment against accidental damage, fire, storm, flood and theft, whether that’s an excavator damaged by a falling tree, a loader stolen from a site overnight or a generator destroyed by fire.

Policies are typically written on an agreed value or market value basis, and accurate valuation is critical, because underinsurance can see claims scaled back.

When you hire equipment from a third party, you are typically responsible for it while it is in your care, custody and control.

Hire agreements usually make you liable for the full replacement cost if it is damaged, stolen or destroyed.

Your standard Plant and Machinery policy covers equipment you own, not equipment you’ve hired, which is the gap Hired-In Plant Insurance is designed to fill.

Plant and Machinery policies generally cover damage from external events and exclude internal mechanical and electrical failure, such as engine, hydraulic or electrical faults.

Machinery Breakdown Insurance covers that excluded territory.

For businesses whose income stops when a machine stops, this cover, sometimes paired with extra-cost-of-hire extensions, can matter as much as the base policy.

Moving equipment between sites on a float or low-loader creates its own exposure, including during loading and unloading, which is where many transit losses actually occur.

Transit Insurance covers your equipment during transport.

Given the size and weight of most plant, a single transit incident can produce major damage.

Public Liability Insurance covers third-party injury or property damage arising from the operation of your equipment.

Principal contractors will require evidence of it before your machines come onto their site.

Road-registrable plant travelling on public roads may also need Commercial Motor Vehicle cover, and it is worth confirming which policy responds in which situation so there is no gap between the two.
